Old Town of Phuket

The Old Town of Phuket is located at the south of the island. Before the reign of King Rama V, the north of the island was known as "Thalang." However, due to several battles resulting in migration toward the south, many resettled areas were named after this name as witnessed in Thalang Ban Takian, Thalang Ban Korn and Thalang Tarua.

Noted for its rich tin ores in Ayuthara period, Phuket became a major port for western merchants. In the reign or Rama IV, the governor Luang Phitak Taweep relocated the city from Ban Ket Ho(Kratu) to Tung Kha, currently the Phuket Municipality area.

In a later period (1901-1913), with his great breathe of vision, Phuket Governor Phraya Ratsadanupradit, known as Khosimbee Na Ranong, launched a city development plan of infrastructure and buildings with the tax paid by mining entrepreneurs. This development resulted in currently witnessed buildings and mansions.

Thus, it was found that typical architectures resembled those found in adjacent countries like Malaysia and Singapore, especially port cities where tin trading was undertaken. They included Penang, Singapore, Malacca, Tai Ping, Ta Kua Pa (in Pangnga) and Ranong

Typically known as Sino-Portuguese style, indeed this architecture was a perfect blend of Chinese and European patterns in various eras as well as Indian ones.

Three main architectural styles were witnessed in Phuket in term of application: public houses, warehouses and mansions. The main structure of these houses is brick-constructed, majestically decorated with artistic cements along thick walls and designed frames influenced by Roman and Classic style in Europe.
